It's the most wonderful time of the year Hornet Nation!  We ended our last week before winter break with lots of celebration!  Students enjoyed festivities with their teachers and classmates, staff had some pretty fun moments showing their school spirit, and parents enjoyed coming into the building to participate in all of the fun.  What a time we had this week!  Thank you to our Halley PTO for supporting our week of Halley Cheer! 

Please enjoy time with family and friends over the winter break. 

Our school office will be closed over the winter break: December 23rd thru January 3rd.

We look forward to seeing each of our students in grades PK-6 after winter break on Monday, January 6th.  Our doors open at 9:10 AM.  School officially begins at 9:20 AM.

Our chorus students enjoyed making spirits bright as they went from room to room serenading our Halley kiddos on Thursday and Friday of this week.  Our phenomenal chorus directors, Ms. Smith and Mrs. Poblete did an excellent job arranging this special event.  Beautiful job Halley students!

Halley ES has a chronic absenteeism rate of 17.2%.  Let's decrease that number as we head into the winter months.  We love our Hornets…and we want to see them at school everyday!

As the weather is starting to get colder, we want to remind all parents to ensure that their child brings a warm coat for recess. Staying warm during outdoor activities is important for your child's comfort and health.

If your child needs a warm coat, please know that assistance is available. Families can reach out to our school social worker, Mrs. Liz DeVoll at [email protected]  or contact the front office for support in obtaining a coat for their child.

The Superintendent’s Boundary Review Advisory Committee held its second meeting on December 16 at Gatehouse Administration Center. That’s the bulletin board from our Halley front office!  We mean what we say Hornet Nation…we love our Halley community!  As we approach the extended winter break, please use this time to rejuvenate and enjoy time with friends and family.

As a reminder, winter break will be held Monday, December 23, to Friday, January 3. To help make sure you and your children have a restful break, we have asked that no homework be assigned during this time. Teachers may assign long-range assignments in the weeks ahead of the break, allowing students to practice time management skills, but no assignments will be due immediately following the break. We look forward to welcoming students back in the new year. Classes resume on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025. See the complete school year calendar.

It's time for Halley's Spelling Bee!

We are so excited for this fantastic opportunity to participate in the 2024- 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

  • Grade level spelling bee: Thursday, January 23rd during school hours.
  • Top 4 finishers in each grade level (1st-6th) will advance to the Halley Elementary School-wide Spelling Bee: Thursday, February 20th from 6:00-8:00 pm.
  • The school champion will advance to the Fairfax County Spelling Bee: Sunday, March 23rd at 2:00 PM at Lake Braddock Secondary School.
  • The county champion will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee held in late May, 2025.
  • Students have a new way to study by downloading Word Club for free in the App Store or Google Play Store

When your child is sick, please call our attendance line or school office at 703-551-5700 to report an illness.

Hornet Happenings Week of December 9th

 

It was nice to see some of you in the building last week!

Last week was full of a lot of action at Halley ES!  We had two big school-wide events that simply made my heart happy.  We started the week with our Halley book fair…and wow it was such a great event that truly benefited our students and school.  It was awesome how many parents came and volunteered their time to support our book fair.  We even had former Halley Hornets volunteering at the check-out counter!  The fun did not stop there as we hosted our second school-wide morning meeting called, Hive Time.  Again, we had the opportunity to host parents for this special event where we celebrated each other at Halley as outstanding individuals.  I love when the school-body comes together.  It builds comradery, develops a sense of family, and allows your kiddos to have a good time with one another.  Let’s keep the momentum going as we head into the new year!

Reminder:  Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

 

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to  Christy Talley [email protected] no later than December 15, 2024

 

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted. 

 

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Christy Talley at [email protected].

 

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

Parents/guardians who would like their student to be considered for full-time Advanced Academic services may submit the Full-Time Referral Form (translations linked below) no later than December 15, 2024. No late forms will be accepted.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

 

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices. 

 

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

 

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Family Academy Orientation

 This interactive orientation provides information about FCPS, the connections between family engagement and student achievement, school staff you should know, and programs and technology considerations for families. The orientation also includes a helpful discussion for families who are new to the United States.

Sessions in English will be held online on Tuesday, December 10, at 6 p.m. and Thursday, December 19, at 6 p.m. Register in advance. Visit the Family Academy catalog page to see when orientation will be offered in Korean and Spanish.

Hornet Happenings Week of December 2nd

 

It’s Book Fair week at Halley Elementary!

We are so excited for our Halley Scholastic book fair.  Our Halley teachers love reading to their kiddos…and our students enjoy a good book!  Every purchase from our Scholastic Book Fair benefits our Halley library.  The book fair will be open throughout the school day until December 6th.  On Wednesday, Mrs. Hall our librarian will open the book fair to our Halley community from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  So come on out Hornet Nation and invest in a good book and our school!

Fall Book Fair

The Fall Halley Book Fair is almost here!  This year’s dates will be Monday, Dec. 2 – Friday, Dec. 6.  

You can preview the Book Fair flyer, set up a digital e-wallet and shop online here.  Students will preview the Book Fair earlier in the week and may make purchases in school on Thursday 12/5 and Friday 12/6.  Family Night will be Wednesday evening, Dec. 4th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  If you’d like to volunteer to help with this event, you can sign up here or contact Ms. Hall – [email protected].  We hope to see you there!

Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

 As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

It’s Thanksgiving week Hornet Nation!

What are you thankful for right now?  I’m grateful to have such a talented group of educators who go the distance for each of our Halley kiddos every single day always giving their best to ensure Halley is a place where excellence thrives!  I’m thankful for amazing Halley students who bring their best efforts to school every day!  Finally, I’m thankful for a community of Halley parents who work collaboratively with our Halley staff to ensure our students thrive in a learning environment of love, acceptance, and teamwork to be the best Hornets they can be.

Fall Book Fair

 

The Fall Halley Book Fair is almost here!  This year’s dates will be Monday, Dec. 2 – Friday, Dec. 6.  

You can preview the Book Fair flyer, set up a digital e-wallet and shop online here.  Students will preview the Book Fair earlier in the week and may make purchases in school on Thursday 12/5 and Friday 12/6.  Family Night will be Wednesday evening, Dec. 4th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  If you’d like to volunteer to help with this event, you can sign up here or contact Ms. Hall – [email protected].  We hope to see you there!

Your cover must:

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices. 

 

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

 

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

️ Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

 

 Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

As of Friday, November 22nd, Halley had a chronic absenteeism rate of 14.6%.

Attendance Impacts Learning: Research Shows Startling Statistics

  • Only 17% of students who were chronically absent in both kindergarten and first grade were reading proficiently in third grade, compared to 64% of those with good attendance. 
  • Students who fail to read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than students who achieve proficiency to drop out of high school. 
  • By sixth grade, chronic absenteeism becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.

This month, we are starting a new attendance initiative. Students who miss 0 days of school this month will receive a star to place on their backpacks on November 26th. Students who attend all days of school for the week will be entered into a weekly drawing for a prize.

IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair


Parents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School. 


The event is sponsored by Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Activities include simulated IEP meetings, break-out sessions on the various parts of an IEP, and a resource fair to learn more about community supports. Register in advance.

Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

 

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence, reminds us of our commitment to supporting each and every student and helping them meet or exceed high academic standards.

Hello Hornet Nation!  The season of Fall is in full bloom…and I absolutely love it!  The weather has truly been picture perfect.  I hope you have taken time to enjoy the beautiful foliage of the season.

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

How Can You Help Your Child Have Good Attendance in 2nd Quarter?

Just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and put your child behind in school.  This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school.

  • Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day, make that the expectation. 
  • Help your child maintain routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
  • Find out if your child feels engaged by his classes and feels safe at school. Make sure he or she is not missing class because of behavioral issues and school discipline policies. If any of these are problems, work with your school.
  • Stay on top of academic progress and seek help from teachers or tutors if necessary. Make sure teachers know how to contact you.
  • Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated.
  • Encourage meaningful afterschool activities, including sports and clubs.

Looking ahead to the holiday season, if missing school is unavoidable, talk to your children’s teachers in advance to create a plan for making up missed work.  But remember, a homework packet cannot make up for the interaction and learning that goes on in the classroom.

Native American Heritage Month

 

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

National Family Engagement Month

This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success. 

FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth. Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.

Veterans Day Monday, November 11, is a holiday and schools will be closed for students

Election Day Bake Sale:

The PTO needs your help to make our November 5th Election Day Bake Sale at Halley Elementary school a success! This fundraiser will support lower-cost field trips and the 6th-grade promotion celebration. Check out the volunteer page here .

Donate baked goods: Bake or buy individually wrapped items to sell by donation.  

Help sell: We need parent and responsible student volunteers to assist at the bake sale table during different time slots throughout Election Day.

Can't volunteer? No worries! You can still contribute by making a donation. We’re already accepting donations, here !

You can submit a nomination for each category, you will just need to submit a new form for each nomination .

📖Book Character Day is Thursday, October 31st

Students can celebrate the end of the first quarter by dressing up as thier favorite book character.  Please follow the guidlines listed below so we can all be safe and have fun!

-masks may not be worn

-shoes are required

Federal Impact Aid Survey

Attention Halley Elementary School Families! The Federal Impact Aid Survey is now avaiable to complete online

The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify: 

  • Military families.
  • Federally connected families.
  • Families living on a military base.

Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the enrolling parent can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form. 

For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student starting November 12. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.

Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.

Directions for completing the Federal Imapact Aid form online

Step 1: CLICK HERE or use the QR Code to be taken to SIS ParentVUE.

If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child’s school for an activation letter. 

2. After you’ve logged into your ParentVue Account, look for the ‘Online Packets’ link at the top of the page. Click ‘Online Packets’.

3. Next, click the ‘Federal Impact Aid Survey’ button on the bottom of the page:

If you have multiple children in Fairfax County Public Schools, please make sure to fill out a form for each of your children. You will know you have completed all of the forms when you see a green check next to each of their names on the final screen.

Hornet Happenings Week of October 21st

 

Special Announcement

We are proud to announce Halley’s next assistant principal, Mrs. Kayleigh Merritt!

Mrs. Merritt is eager to become part of the Halley community…and we are super excited to have her join our family of Hornets!

Mrs. Kayleigh Merritt is thrilled to be part of the Halley Elementary Family! Mrs. Merritt was born and raised in Virginia. Mrs. Merritt always knew she wanted to be a teacher.  She attended Longwood University where she received her undergraduate degree in Liberal Studies. While teaching, she continued her own love of learning earning a master’s degree in PK-6 elementary mathematics. Recently, she completed her leadership certification through Fairfax County Public School’s (FCPS) partnership with the University of Virginia’s Accelerated Certificate Cohort for Leadership (ACC) program.

Mrs. Merritt started her career in education over 15 years ago. She began teaching in Colonial Beach, Virginia as a fourth and fifth grade math teacher and high school cheerleading coach at Colonial Beach Elementary School. In 2012, Ms. Merritt’s career in FCPS began at Riverside Elementary and continued at Mount Eagle Elementary where she served as a second, third, and fourth grade teacher. In 2018, she joined the Cameron Elementary community as the Elementary Math Resource Teacher (EMRT). In this role, Mrs. Merritt has been part of many leadership initiatives including the Instructional Leadership Team, MTSS Core Team, Behavior Committee, Testing Coordinator and Lead Mentor.

Mrs. Merritt enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter, and golden retriever. They love spending time outdoors, exploring new local places, and going for walks to their neighborhood bakery. They love cheering on the local sports teams (Go Commanders) and attending the Capitals hockey games #ALLCAPS.

Let’s get ready to welcome Mrs. Merritt to our Halley community on Tuesday, October 22nd.

Many sincere thanks to Mr. Keith Hirsch for his unwavering support as interim assistant principal at Halley since the first week of school.  Mr. Hirsch came out of retirement to support the needs of our staff, parents and students until a permanent assistant principal was chosen.  Mr. Hirsch built strong and positive relationships with our Halley community, and he will be truly missed.  We hope he visits Hornet Nation when his schedule allows.

***Important Reminder*** Monday, October 21st is a 3 Hour Early Release Day @ 1:05 PM

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it. 

A Google survey was sent in August and early September asking parents to submit any childcare needs for the 3 Hour Early Release Days in September and October.  We will follow the responses you submitted in the Google survey for Monday’s October 21st  3 hour early release.  If you need to make a change, please call our school office as soon as possible.

Veteran’s Day Celebration: Honoring those who have Served

On Friday, November 8th Halley ES will celebrate and honor those who are currently serving  or have served in our armed forces!

This year’s celebration will look a bit different (see below):

Disability History and Awareness Month

In Virginia during October, Disability History and Awareness activities provide an opportunity to create greater public awareness for individuals with disabilities, with the goal of full inclusion in our community.

National Bullying Prevention Month

 October is National Bullying Prevention Month. To help develop a common understanding of Bullying, below is the FCPS definition. 

Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

If you have questions and/or concerns about something that is going on at school, please contact the front office so that they can support you and most importantly your student

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms

The Health Information Form and the Emergency Care Information form provide valuable information regarding student health conditions. These forms are critical in the early identification of students who may need healthcare support in the educational environment. Along with the development of Healthcare Plans (HCP) and Action Plans, the Public Health Nurses (PHNs) utilize the information contained in the HIF to develop teaching strategies for FCPS staff in order to meet the requirements of Regulation 2104 Health Services-School Health-Related Needs.

These forms are required for all students. Enrolling parents/guardians who have a SIS ParentVUE account may submit them electronically by using the Online Verification/Update packet

For families without SIS ParentVue accounts, forms can be located on the General Registration Forms page. 

Safeway Immunization Clinics for All FCPS Students 

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations at Frost Middle School for all FCPS students at no cost on: 

-Monday, October 28, 3-7 p.m.

 

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 to provide consent. Learn more about immunization resources and registering in other languages for the Safeway clinic.

Elementary School Clinics

The Fairfax County Health Department will provide immunizations for FCPS elementary students on limited early release Mondays at their district offices. All school-required immunizations will be offered at no cost. Call 703-246-7100 to make your appointment.

Hornet Happenings Week of October 14th-18th

It’s Digital Citizenship Week at Halley Elementary!  To recognize the importance of safety and responsibility when using technology we have incorporated a Halley Spirit Week!  A calendar of spirit week events was sent via your child’s classroom teacher’s newsletter.  At the beginning of the school year, every student at Halley in grades K-6 engaged in digital citizenship lessons to ensure a successful school year as it relates to digital technology.  We encourage all families to keep digital citizenship a priority during your regular conversations with your child.  Technology is all around us and our goal is to keep our students safe while exploring its vast variety of tools.

Our Halley PTO is hosting a Hornet Dine Out at Chipotle this evening from 5:00-9:00 PM.  Please look below in the section titled: PTO in the Know for details.

Special Edition Event Reminder: Advanced Academics Information Night: TODAY 10/8 @ 6:00 PM

 

Advanced Academics Parent Information Night: 

This meeting will take place in two parts; you are welcome to come for

one or stay for both!

  Part 1: Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Services at Halley Elementary

There will be an Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) parent information night for families on Tuesday ,October 8th at 6:00 PM in the  Halley Elementary Little Theatre. Fairfax County provides a continuum of services to meet the needs of students at a variety of levels. 

Prior to joining, please feel free to visit the AAP website which outlines the continuum of services available to all students in FCPS. During the first parent information night we will share the specific AAP program supports that are provided at Halley Elementary.

Hornet Happenings Week of October 7th

It was such a beautiful weekend Hornet family!  Did you have the opportunity to get outside and enjoy some of the beautiful Fall weather?  I encourage all families to turn every moment into a connection to student learning.  Did you know the changing of the season falls within the curriculum of students in grades K-6!  It starts as simple as identifying and labeling the part of a tree, then transitioning into the difference between a deciduous and evergreen tree, and eventually landing on the impact nature has on our environment.  Our students are curious about the world around them…why not engage them in some thoughtful conversation on a car ride or while waiting at the bus stop.

 

This week, parents can expect to receive a first quarter interim for students in grades 1st thru 6th on Friday in their folders.  Please review the interim with your child.  If you have questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher via email.

 

For all of our Halley families, please continue to make attendance a priority each day school is open.  We respectfully ask that parents plan family vacations around the the built-in breaks found within our FCPS calendar.  If your child is ill, or must attend an appointment, please notify our front office staff as soon as possible so that it may be documented accordingly in our database.

Safeway Immunization Clinics for All FCPS Students 

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations at Frost Middle School for all FCPS students at no cost on: 

  • Tuesday, October 8, 3-7 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Monday, October 28, 3-7 p.m.

 

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 to provide consent. Learn more about immunization resources and registering in other languages for the Safeway clinic

Elementary School Clinics

The Fairfax County Health Department will provide immunizations for FCPS elementary students on limited early release Mondays at their district offices. All school-required immunizations will be offered at no cost. Call 703-246-7100 to make your appointment.

📚 Social Studies Basal Resources Review

 

FCPS is adopting Social Studies Basal Resources for the 2025-26 school year. Basal resources are the primary resources used to support instruction in a given subject. Public review of the instructional materials under consideration — which is part of the process for selecting new resources — is underway. All community feedback will be shared with School Board members before they vote to select materials in spring 2025. FCPS adopts basal resources by the process outlined in Regulation 3004.

Hornet Happenings Week of September 30th

It’s a short week Halley families!  Our week ends with a holiday observance of Rosh Hashanah followed by a teacher workday on Friday.  As your children begin an extra long weekend, please remember the digital platforms that are available to each student while at home (i.e. ST Math, MyOn, etc.).  Your children know these applications well and can access them easily.  We also encourage your child to read books while at home.  Our fabulous librarian, Mrs. Christie Hall has our Halley library fully up and running and each student has been given the opportunity to check out books of their interest.

Hornet Happenings Week of September 23rd

Welcome to the season of Fall Hornet Nation!  When I hear football playing in the background on a Sunday afternoon, advertisements for all things pumpkin spice, and signs directing me to the local Fall festival…everything just seems… right in the world.  Which activities does your family enjoy during this beautiful season of autumn?  Fun activities such as apple picking, hayrides, and corn mazes all come with their own potential for making connections to learning. 

On Tuesday we will have our fall picture day.  Information regarding ordering pictures was sent home in students’ backpacks last week.  “Say cheese!”  Also, it is not too late to volunteer for picture day.  Simply call our front office and ask to speak with Ms. Wynder.

Our exterior walkways are getting upgraded over the next few weeks.  FCPS facilities will be updating a few of our walkways to ensure they are ADA compliant.  This may affect a bit of our kiss and ride traffic flow.  Please adhere to the directions of our Halley staff at all times.

We understand that the multiple school forms caregivers receive during the first weeks of school can feel overwhelming, but each one helps set your child up for a successful school year! If you do not have a SIS ParentVUE account, please contact the front office for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account webpage

🩹 Immunization Requirements 

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. 

 

You may check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to Halley Elementary’s front office. 

 

Alternative immunization documents (below) may also be provided, but they may not be uploaded in ParentVUE:  

  • A healthcare provider’s written statement specifying all administered immunizations.
  • A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
  • A notarized Religious Exemption form objecting to the administration of immunizations due to conflicts with religious tenets or practices.

 

Advanced Academics Parent Information Night: 

This meeting will take place in two parts; you are welcome to come for one or stay for both!

 

Part 1: Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Services at Halley Elementary

There will be an Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) parent information night for families on Tuesday, October 8th at 6:00 PM in the Halley Elementary Little Theatre. Fairfax County provides a continuum of services to meet the needs of students at a variety of levels. 

Prior to joining, please feel free to visit the AAP website which outlines the continuum of services available to all students in FCPS. During the first parent information night we will share the specific AAP program supports that are provided at Halley Elementary.

Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students. 

After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office. 

Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.

 

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

  • Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
  • Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
  • Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
  • A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
  • Alcohol or drug use.
  • Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family. 
  • Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact Alyssa Concino or Jenny Choi, our school counselors at 703-551-5700 to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

Each one of us is unique, and every student matters. If your student is having a difficult time attending class, please speak with a trusted adult at school.

Hornet Happenings Week of September 16th

Our Halley staff was so pleased to see all of our parents at last week’s Back to School Night!  Four weeks have passed since the first day of school…and you can tell.  Your kiddos are transitioning from one location to the other with ease, classroom procedures and routines have clearly been established, and teachers are getting to the heart of instruction!  This is what Hornet Nation should sound like and feel like parents.  Great engagement, great instruction, and great relationships!

This week starts with a 3-hour early dismissal which begins at 1:05 PM.  Thank you to our families who completed the childcare hardship survey.  If you requested childcare for your child from Halley staff, then arrangements have been made.  If you did not request childcare assistance, your child will be sent home their normal route beginning at 1:05 PM.  If there will be a change to your child’s mode of transportation for Monday, please call the school office as soon as possible at 703-551-5700.

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home from School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

🍽️Fueling Student Success: New Food Options Cooked up at FCPS

Students will have more than a dozen new options for lunch and breakfast in school cafeterias starting this week. New menu items were either favorites at last year’s food show — including Korean BBQ wings, sweet Thai chili wings, chicken tikka masala, and barbacoa street tacos — or were tested with student focus groups and tastings.

Lockdown Drills

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon. Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are exempt from mandatory participation in lockdown drills during the first 60 days of the school year. They will participate in our second and final drill later this school year.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Special Edition: Back to School Night & Childcare Needs for 3 Hour Early Release ACTION ITEM: Childcare Needs 3 Hour Early Release

FCPS needs EVERY family to complete the 3 Hour Early Release Survey!  The first 3-hour early release school day is quickly approaching on September 16th!

If your family is in need of childcare supervision on the 3-hour release days, then you must make your request using the link below:

If you do not request childcare supervision for the early release Mondays using the survey link, then your child will be dismissed from school at 1:05 PM and sent home their normal route.

Parents who will NOT require after-school childcare supervision on early release Mondays MUST also complete the survey.

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development. 

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 16
  • October 21
  • November 18
  • February 10
  • March 10
  • April 21
  • May 12

Thank you for your cooperation in completing the survey as soon as possible as this will help our Halley staff plan accordingly for childcare needs.

Halley Elementary will host its annual Back to School Night on September 10th from 5:30-7:30. This event is for all students in grades K-6.  

Many families have multiple students who attend Halley ES.  Therefore, teachers will conduct their Back to School presentations in two sessions:
